Project Worker – City of Summerside Smart Grid Programmer – Contract / Term 6 months

 

Job Description

The Computer Programmer will write a logical series of instructions that a computer can understand (programs) to implement the designs specified by the systems engineer. The programmer codes these instructions in any of a number of programming languages, depending on the need.

 

Requirements

The successful applicant must have very good literary (non-technical), listening and abstract thinking skills, and be able to articulate technical problems and solutions for understanding. The position is not suitable for applicants with development experience limited to web-based applications.

 

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science
  • Diploma in Electronics, Electro-Mechanical or equivalent Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years experience (amateur or professional) as a computer programmer.
  • Contributions to a published project (either public, commercial, or private industry).
  • Independent or small-team work where all aspects of product development have been attempted from ideation through to completion is preferred.

 

Qualifications

Technical Languages

  • Strong working knowledge of the W3C standards based web (HTML/CSS), JavaScript (including libraries).
  • C/C++ (Preferred), others
  • Scripting: BASH, PHP, others

 

Other

The successful applicant will:

  • demonstrate proficiency with the Linux command-line, (Debian/Ubuntu preferred) including ad-hoc scripting, to determine and collate operating conditions of electronics systems across the network and create reports.
  • have experience with version control systems and wikis.

Web Content Specialist

Web Content Specialist – Project Opportunity - Contract term 1 year
 
The Web Content Specialist (WCS) is responsible for creating and/or acquiring content for web sites, E-Mail newsletters and other on-line communications media. On-line content can take many forms including plain text, links, database content, still images (illustrations, photographs, diagrams) animation, audio, video, interactive devices (forms, forums, chat rooms, polls, questionnaires, etc.).
 
The main responsibility of the WCS will be for the creation or acquisition of engaging and informative content featuring the facilities, events, programs, staff and services provided by the City of Summerside. Maintenance, review and updating of material will be required. Additional responsibilities may include communication with web site users, moderating forums and editing / approving content made by users.
 
The WCS will report to the SCN Business Development Manager and be responsible for the complete content life cycle from ideas to publishing, visitor tracking/reporting back to new ideas. The process will include planning and documenting content ideas for approval, fact-finding, engaging with City residents and staff of all departments, photography, graphic design, copy-writing and on-line publishing using a web based system. The successful applicant will possess excellent writing and grammar skills, be outgoing and well organized.
 
A working knowledge of business applications (Microsoft Office or equivalent) is required. A previous or current position in a writing / design / publishing role or equivalent experience is required. Graphical Design and Web Programming (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) are considered a strong asset but not required.
 
Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate a body of work (portfolio, on-line links, and references) in this or a closely related field.

Customer Support Representative - Replacement Position

 

The City of Summerside has a great opportunity for a dynamic individual for the position of CSR.  Reporting to the Manager of the Summerside Community Network, the CSR plays a lead role in customer support and diagnostic checks for internet service customers over the phone, via email, and in person.

This is an excellent opportunity for the right individual to enter the exciting world of municipal government with plenty of potential to grow and advance. To be considered for this position previous call centre and technical help desk experience is a requirement. The successful applicant will have a working knowledge of operating systems and network protocols (SMTP, HTTP, DNS, DHCP etc.). Must have general knowledge of current internet services (Skype, Blogs, Streaming Media) and be committed to continuous on the job learning. Post secondary education is an asset.
