Supporting the world community - one (or two) coffee(s) at a time

Pocket change can go a lot further than a cup of java. For some time the Route2 staff has been contributing to Kiva, "a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty." Kiva's mission, to facilitate "Loans that change Lives," caught our eye as a way to do our part to assist those who have the will to improve their lives, but lack the means to do so. The system is simple: we drink coffee, we drop our change left over from the coffee trip into our office Kiva piggy bank, and when it's reached a substantial amount, we count up the change and deposit this new "micro-loan" with Kiva. We can then choose a borrower from a waiting list of thousands of entrepreneurs from 59 countries, all of whom have profiles, complete with photos, personal and family details, their plan for the money, repayment schedules and more. Kiva forwards our loan to the borrower we choose and reports back as he or she pays off his or her loan with the profits (statistically, 98.79% of loans are successful). Route2 staff loans have helped house Cambodian and Peruvian families and allowed a Bolivian auto-repairman to remodel his garage; outstanding loans are currently funding the purchase of new tools for craftsmen in Peru and Togo.
